Dining Room

Danish Design Chairs

Denmark has a remarkable design heritage, which is clearly reflected in its chair design, ranging from dining chairs to stools and benches created by Danish designers. Danish designer chairs gained worldwide recognition in the 20th century. Among the most renowned Danish chair designers are Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, and Børge Mogensen. They created furniture that not only inspired designers in Denmark but also internationally. The influence of their work and designs can still be seen in modern furniture design today.

On this page, you can learn more about the various Danish designer chairs that have shaped the design of those iconic pieces which, over time, have become true icons of furniture and chair design.

Appreciation for Exceptional Materials, Local Craft Traditions, and Distinct Scandinavian Design

We have placed great importance on sustainability since the very day we founded Form & Refine. The materials we use are carefully selected and processed with great skill and experience, following traditional methods. We value natural materials and design exclusive collections rooted in refined Nordic aesthetics.

Sustainable Design

With a focus on CO₂ emissions, we carefully consider everything we do and produce. At Form & Refine, we believe in a sustainable future and continuously strive to expand our awareness. We believe that improvements are always possible.

Our commitment to sustainability aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We take responsibility and aim to produce in the most environmentally friendly way possible. The global challenges and goals described in the SDGs reflect the core values of our company. For this reason, we have structured our sustainability efforts into five key areas carbon footprint, longevity, social equity, economic value, and natural materials.

Learn more about our commitment to sustainability.

Natural Materials

We are strong advocates of minimalism and embrace the natural qualities of materials. Since our founding in 2018, we have focused on using the most durable and sustainable materials available. These include wood, brass, ceramic, steel, alpaca, cork, and vegetable tanned leather. In our view, these materials develop the most beautiful patina over time and ensure products that will last for generations.

Chairs That Shaped Danish Chair Design

At its core, a Danish chair is like any other chair found around the world. It is a piece of furniture that closely mirrors the human body, with a seat, arms, legs, and a backrest. Moreover, the user interacts with almost every part of the chair while sitting, creating a close connection between the person and the object. Below, we take a closer look at several chairs that are characteristic of Danish chair design.

The CH24 The Wishbone Chair

A very well known dining chair, commonly found in dining rooms across Denmark. It was the first chair designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1949. The CH24 features a timeless, minimalist design with a distinctive backrest shaped like a wishbone, which earned it its nickname. For many, it is Wegner’s most iconic chair.

The Egg A Gentle Embrace in Leather

Designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, The Egg is widely recognized for its soft curves and egg like shape. It is a classic example of Scandinavian minimalism. Moving away from more detail oriented design was essential for the chairs Jacobsen created during this period. It remains a timeless classic, shaped by the dominant design characteristics of its era.

The CH36 An Elegant Dining Chair

This chair, designed in 1962 by Hans J. Wegner, is one of the pieces most similar to one of our own chairs, the Blueprint Chair. While the two may appear alike, their construction differs significantly. Sitting on them offers a completely different experience, as the woven natural seat contrasts with a solid wooden seat. The visual expression also differs slightly, with our chair presenting a more minimalist appearance than Wegner’s version.

The Designers Who Made Danish Chairs Famous

Who are the designers who helped bring Danish furniture design to global attention. In the following section, we introduce these designers and explore what made their work so special.

Hans J. Wegner

Arguably one of the most recognized names in Danish furniture design, Wegner designed more than 500 chairs and contributed significantly to innovation in the field. Functionality and simplicity are at the core of his designs, which have been produced since 1950.

Wegner began as an apprentice at the Danish cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg and later attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen. From 1938, he designed furniture for Aarhus City Hall, marking the beginning of his design journey. In 1943, he founded his own design studio, where he created one of his most famous pieces, the Wishbone Chair. The chair has been in continuous production ever since, proving its timeless appeal.

Wegner received numerous awards for his work and was recognized not only by the public but also by the artistic elite. His pieces are exhibited in major design museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Die Neue Sammlung in Munich.

Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen was one of Denmark’s most renowned architects. While primarily working in architecture, he also designed furniture specifically for his architectural projects. In addition, he created textiles, lighting, and other designs, all guided by the same philosophy as his buildings and furniture.

Jacobsen began his career as a mason, later studied at the Technical School in Copenhagen, and eventually graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

He drew inspiration from nature, combining organic forms with functionality to create furniture that is both visually appealing and highly practical. A defining trait of his design approach was perfectionism. His attention to detail is particularly evident in one of his most famous projects, the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, where he designed both the building and the entire interior to ensure a cohesive design language.

Børge Mogensen

Børge Mogensen was one of the leading figures of Danish Modern, a furniture design movement that gained popularity in the 1920s. Like other Danish Modern designs, his work was functional and understated. Mogensen was often referred to as the people’s designer because his furniture combined high quality with affordability, making it accessible to a broader audience.

He began his career as a cabinetmaker in 1934 and later worked in the studios of Kaare Klint and Mogens Koch. In 1942, he became head designer at the internationally recognized furniture brand FDB Møbler.

In 1950, Mogensen founded his own design studio, where he created modern, practical furniture using materials sourced from Scandinavian countries. He drew inspiration from various sources, including lithographs and Japanese woodwork, modernizing traditional furniture forms.

In addition to designing furniture, he also taught furniture design. He emphasized the use of modern production techniques, reflecting his belief that furniture should be made for the people.
